Slowly working my way through the Illumination Loops chapter in the RenderMan Shading Language Guide. Here’s a few examples I was tinkering with the wrap diffuse surface shader on. Still pretty simplistic at this point, but everything takes time.

Hendrix. Hendrix the puppy. He’s cute, and will probably stay that way! I’ve never lived with a dog before… quite the new adventure to navigate. Just like when I got Maggie and had no previous cat/dog ownership experience, there’s definitely a bit of a learning curve. So far I’ve got down that he’s not allowed to eat onions, garlic, or chocolate. Check. What next?

Wandering along a marked trail after the rain feels like it demands to be treated as a metaphor for life — you’re following in the path that so many others have taken, carefully navigating over the same water holes, and avoiding slipping and falling down the slick, uneven steps, eventually to arrive at a beautiful look-off point. What I’ve been wondering more and more lately though is, what are the risks and rewards for stepping off the trail and making your own path. The metaphor can be applied in any manner of scenarios, and it’s so simple it could be applied in the same manner as a horoscope, but it’s still nice to know these little things keep us thinking.

Sydney photographer and filmmaker Keith Loutit attracted an internet and media sensation, following the release of his ‘Bathtub’ series of short films, that transformed both iconic and familiar Sydney scenes into miniature wonderlands. Known as the pioneer of the tilt-shift / time-lapse technique, Loutit was the first to recognize how time and focus combine to support the powerful illusion of miniaturization in film. In his scaled down and sped up realities, real world subjects become their miniature counterparts. Boats bob like toys in a bathtub, cars race like slot-cars, and crowds march as toy armies. Loutit’s aim is create a sense of wonder in our surroundings by “challenging people’s perceptions of scale, and helping the viewer to distance themselves from places they know well”.
